Illustration Friday theme: Tree

if tree This is my entry for the Illustration Friday theme, Tree. The tree is such a beautiful, yet underappreciated gift to the world. It produces oxygen for us to breathe, removes carbon dioxide (cooling the earth), purifies the air, and protects against soil erosion. This particular tree provides a home to a bird singing; under the watchful eye of a beagle.

Illustration Friday theme: Imagination

if imagination This is my entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme, Imagination. In many cultures, the raven was a symbol of communication with the imagination, and subconcious. It was also viewed as sometimes being a mischievous trickster. At times the sun will strike its feathers at the right angle, and reveal an iridescent band of colour.

Illustration Friday theme: Identical (Versions I & II)

if identical Version I if identical This is my entry for the Illustration Friday theme, Identical. Illustration Friday theme: Teacher

if teacher This is my entry for the Illustration Friday theme, Teacher. Hypatia of Alexandria was a Greek mathematician & philosopher in Roman Egypt. Around 400 AD she became head of the famed Platonist school; where she taught mathematics, philosophy, & astronomy. She was also the last librarian of the Library of Alexandria (considered the largest & most significant library of the ancient world). Both she, & the library fell victim to the violence & upheaval of that time. She is played by Rachel Weisz, in the 2009 film, "Agora". In 415 AD she was denounced as a witch, then subjected to a gruesome death at the hands of an angry mob. She later came to be seen as a secular "patron saint" of science & libraries. In this image she is holding two planispheric astrolabes (an astronomy tool of the ancient world). Scientific advances of the Renaissance, & Enlightenment were built on the re-discovered knowledge of the Classical world.

Illustration Friday theme: Bounce

if bounce This is my entry for the Illustration Friday theme, Bounce. The subject is bounce, and the dictionary definition says that it comes from a word meaning thump. It also means to spring forward, or leap. There is a rabbit in the movie Bambi, called Thumper. There are two rabbits in my image, and the one at the top is bounding off the page. The Faberge eggs are loosely connected to the Easter bunny.

Illustration Friday theme: Capable

if capable

This is my entry for the Illustration Friday theme, Capable. After the kangaroos and monkey escaped from the zoo, they took a much needed rest while they planned the next stage of their journey. Busting out of their confinement was the easy part - but what should they do next? Was Monkey capable of keeping up with them on the next part of their journey? They were doubtful. The Roos thought it best if Monkey caught a slow boat to China. His boxing skills weren't much to speak of - and that just wouldn't do, with their mob.
